  • My mise en scene

Michael Curtiz took one look at the two,

Said let me readjust the scene,

    Gave Humphrey Bogart platform shoes

    Lucy and me

I had her tied to a tree

    By some vicious Cherokee

And I’m the gunslinger setting her free

    She declined,

Was never the kind to be rescued

    I was lost

What use was it owning a toy gun

    Tried so hard

    Staying true to my art,

    argued

    Besides, fanfare and kettledrums

    There must be

    Soft strings, slow winding melodies

    For this affirmative action heroine

Tomboy turned femme fatal and finally

Sweet docile guardian of the family

    Lucy and me

    Five decades ago

    Never pictured my leading role

    Explain himself in therapy

    Dr. Matisse

She made us tell it again

    Said the key to harmony

    Lies in our childhood memories

I was sulking, always angry, never coping

With her messing up my mise on scene,

In the playground brushed it off as just a phase

Twelve inches taller she was towering over me

Was I fit to assist this lady in distress?

    It was hard to believe

Twelve years later, did exceed her

    Both in strength and height

And still she would not yield

    Lucy and me

    Opportunities lost

For a safe and warm embrace

    Instead she served me uppercuts

    I’m too tired to fight

    For what is rightfully mine

To have a scene designed for me

I’ll do what it takes, wear platform shoes

    For you
